Opinion: Memorial day weekend

Memorial day weekend is upon us. It seems that the month of May is the speediest month of the year. The tulips, lilacs and lilies of the valley are in bloom. The hum of lawn mowers whizzing on lawns in the neighborhood and the many trips to your favorite gardening spot for flowers signals that the weekend is here. Spring is nearing its end and summer is sprinting towards us.

What's your weekend plan? Are you going camping? Laundry? More spring cleaning? Finally time to clean out your car and get it detailed? Taking all your ill fitting clothes to be donated? If so, don't forget your old shoes. Are you meeting up with friends and family members for a cookout? Do you intend to rest with a book or streaming service on deck?

There are too many people who have lost loved ones this month. Whether you know them or not, their pain is going to be overt or covert. They may try to quell it with food, adult beverages or pharmaceuticals, so pay attention to them. Bring tissues, a pillow, a card, kind words, pictures, a hug or just an ear to listen and assist them in managing their grief. Say a prayer or provide spiritual guidance during this time of mourning. Visit a cemetery and place a flag on a veterans grave. They died serving in a branch of the United States Armed Forces and we honor their ultimate sacrifice.
