HI-CHEW candy maker to expand NC facility, invest $134M, create 204 jobs in Orange Co.
Morinaga America Foods, Inc. confirms it will expand operations in Orange County and investment $136 million. The move will create 204 jobs in Mebane.The Japanese company established its American subsidiary in 2013 and chose North Carolina for its first manufacturing site outside of Asia.The Mebane facility opened in 2015 and produces one of the company's signature products, the fruity candy HI-CHEW. Morinaga says demand for its most popular candy is driving the need for expansion. North Carolina approves party seeking to put RFK Jr. on the ballot, rejects effort for Cornel West
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s election board voted Tuesday to certify a political party that wants to put Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the state’s presidential ballot this fall. The panel rejected a similar petition effort by a group backing Cornel West, citing questions about how signatures were collected. After weeks of reviewing the signature drives, the board voted 4-1 to recognize the We The People party that supporters of Kennedy, an author and environmental lawyer, are using as a vehicle for him to run in a handful of states. The election board decision means the party can place Kennedy on statewide ballots. But the board’s Democratic majority voted 3-2 along party lines to block the Justice for All Party of North Carolina from ballots. That group supports West, a professor and progressive activist. Board staff said We The People and Justice for All each collected enough valid signatures from registered and qualified voters. The 13,865 required are a small fraction of those needed to run as an independent candidate in North Carolina, which Kennedy initially attempted.

Lisa Gillespie, 37, of Fayetteville, is the principal of Mary McArthur Elementary School. She was nominated for 40 Under 40 because she "has created a successful school environment. Since becoming the principal of Mary McArthur Elementary she has helped the school to get out of 'low performing' status," nominator Shirley Braxton-McLaurin writes. "She successfully led the school through the pandemic by supporting and leading teachers through online teaching. ... She makes herself available to families and builds relationships with them. She is wise beyond her years, as I have seen her assist families with finding the resources they need as well as helping them to solve family issues or at least give an objective and honest view of the situation. She is an advocate for students with special needs and inclusion. She embraces the population, as she does all students, however, special needs kids hold a special place in her heart. Rocky Mount man charged with statutory rape
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) - A Rocky Mount man is in jail after being charged with statutory rape. Kyle Sanders was arrested Tuesday at his home. Rocky Mount police say they got a call from a neighbor in the 800 block of South Tilery Street after getting information about a missing child and a wanted person. They say the victim was in Sanders’s home and taken to Nash UNC Health Care as a precaution.

Family members of Wednesday “Wendy” Johnson thinks she suffered a possible heat-related death after delivering mail for the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 95-degree heat, WRAL reports. Johnson, 51, died at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on June 6. Her family claims she died from heat stroke after she started to feel weary delivering mail on an extremely hot day.
