Cooling centers open throughout Caroline County

As temperatures rise, so do the risks associated with high heat. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to severe health issues, such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration.

Certain populations are at a higher risk of heat-related illnesses:

Older adults: As people age, their ability to regulate body temperature diminishes. Chronic medical conditions and medications can further impair this ability, making seniors particularly susceptible to heat stress.Infants and young children: Children’s bodies heat up faster than adults, and they are less likely to recognize and communicate their discomfort or need for hydration.People with chronic medical conditions: Conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory disorders can reduce the body’s ability to handle heat.Athletes and outdoor workers: Those who engage in strenuous physical activities outdoors are at higher risk due to increased body heat and fluid loss through sweat.Low-income households and individuals: Limited access to air conditioning and other cooling resources can make it difficult for individuals to escape the heat.

The health department advises people to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. They also say to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can lead to dehydration.

Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing can help people stay cool, as can staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

The health department recommends spending time public places like libraries, malls or community centers if people don’t have access to air conditioning at home. Fans can also help, especially when used with a damp cloth to create a cooling effect, the health department said.

Taking cool showers and baths can help lower body temperature quickly.

By understanding the dangers of high heat and taking these precautionary measures, people can better protect themselves and those who are most vulnerable during the summer months, the health department said.
