Fletcher escape and murder case brings questions about public safety of jail work details
ELIZABETHTON — Should Billy Fletcher have been allowed out of the Carter County Detention Center to work as a trusty?. That has been a hot topic on local and regional social media over the past few weeks since Fletcher has been indicted on a murder charge after he allegedly walked off his work detail at the jail on June 20 and somehow came into contact with local citizen Victor Birchfield. It is believed that Fletcher used Birchfield’s vehicle to make his escape to South Carolina. A body was found in a section of Butler, an area near Fletcher’s residence and a location he knew well. After he was taken into custody by South Carolina authorities and indicted by a Johnson County grand jury shortly after he was returned to Tennessee. The grand jury indicted Fletcher on charges of first degree murder during the commission of a felony; abuse of a corpse; and theft over $2,500.
