CARTERET, NJ — Drag race celebrity-driver Elizabeth “Lizzy” Musi – who grew up in this Middlesex County community – has lost her toughest challenge against breast cancer at age 33.

Elizabeth Patricia Musi was born and raised here, and was a 2009 Carteret High School graduate. She went on to become a professional drag racer, television personality and internet influencer, living in North Carolina for over a decade.

Lizzy Musi was laid to rest on Wednesday, July 3, following funeral services at a Roman Catholic Church in Mooresville, NC, according to Cavin-Cook Funeral Home .

Diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2023, Musi’s June 27th death stunned her race fans, according to her family’s Facebook posts. Fans offered their prayers on social media for her full recovery and their hopes that she would return to the race circuit and TV.

Lizzy followed in the footsteps of her father – race car driver Pat Musi – who ran an engine-building business on Leffert Street in Carteret for years. He moved that business, Pat Musi Racing Engines , and his family to North Carolina in 2012.

Lizzy first got behind the wheel of a junior-dragster at age 8 under her dad's supervision. By 16-years-old, and still a Carteret High student, she competed in a few East Coast drag races, winning some.

She became an international celebrity with a loyal fan base by appearing on the Discovery Channel's “ Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings ” TV series. She was that show's first high-speed driver to win three consecutive heats; and the first woman to break the 200-mph barrier in an eighth-mile “ doorslammer ” race.
