Fireworks in trash against the house, cause of house fire near Carthage

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. (KOAM) — About 10:50 p.m. Wednesday night reports of smoke and flames west of Carthage, Mo. on Island Lane alerted Jasper County E-911.

Carthage Fire, Jasper County Deputies and Mercy Ambulance responded. Oronogo Fire, Duenweg Fire and Carterville Fire were enroute via auto mutual aid.

The large new construction home had active fire and smoke from the charlie-delta corner (right rear) where garage doors were located.

The fire had gotten into the roofline as firefighters were out for attack.

The family was out of the structure safely.

With arriving units and personnel the active flames were knocked down but the attic space was showing smoke from the seams of the roof.

The attack continued as firefighters pulling hoses went into the dark attic.

As they went to ventilate the home it was determined there was a lot of 1) trapped smoke or (2 smoldering fire on the bravo (left) inside the attic.

It was explained to us they needed to vent that space so they took a saw and cut into the roof and smoke barreled out of the space.

The Carthage Fire Marshal was requested to respond for investigation about midnight.

Mutual aid units and staff began dismissing around 12:30 a.m. Carthage Fire Command declared fire out at 12:50 a.m. and returned to quarters.

    FIRE INVESTIGATION REVEALS FIREWORKS

We learn from Carthage Fire investigators the family had been enjoying an evening of family fireworks and shortly before the fire they had cleaned up some of the spent fireworks remnants placing them in a trash can, and leaving it against the house between garage doors.

There is no official ruling, however preliminary evidence shows fire originated in the area of that trash can then traveled up the side of the house into the eave and attic area.

Chief Jason Martin reminds us recently of local educational events where it was mentioned to keep spent fireworks away from the home.

There is a for sale sign out front of the residence from Fathom Realty . Online the home is listed for $612,000.

ONE YEAR AGO SAME TYPE OF FIRE IN CARTHAGE

A large 2 story home in nearby Breckenwood July 4, 2023 had the exact same type of fire . Spent fireworks had been placed in a trash can next to the structure. Former Fire Chief Ryan Huntley stated that area is where the fire originated.

That home was razed weeks later as it was deemed a total loss.
