    Former Jefferson Co. legislator Barbara Webber passes away

    WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) -Trailblazing former Jefferson County legislator Barbara Webber has passed away at the age of 92.

    The former elementary school teacher for two-and-a-half decades in the Carthage School District and first African American woman serve three terms with the Jefferson County Legislature passed away on July 16.

    She served three terms on the legislature and was a 2018 Athena Award winner. Webber was also an original member of the Women of the Mountain support group on Fort Drum according to her obituary.

    She was also recognized as the New York State Outstanding Senior of the Year twice by former New York State Senator Patty Ritchie and was named a New York State Senate Woman of Distinction.

    Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight at Sweet Haven Church in Black River.

    Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Main Post Chapel on Fort Drum. Those attending the funeral should enter through Lt. Gen. Paul G. Cerjan Gate Fort Drum on Route 11.To gain wuick access and avoid gate delays, a prayer card obtained from calling hours or a printed or electronic copy of the obituary must be presented at the gate.
