A Good Samaritan has died after a crash on Interstate 10 in Pinal County Sunday morning.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say the crash took place around 6:30 a.m. on I-10 near mile marker 185, north of Casa Grande.

Officials say the incident began when an ambulance driver possibly fell asleep. The ambulance lost control, traveling back and forth across the roadway before rolling and landing on its wheels near the right shoulder.

The driver and a female passenger, both American Medical Response employees, were in the ambulance at the time of the crash. Officials say no patients were being transported.

Officials say two good Samaritans, a man and woman from different vehicles, stopped to help those inside the ambulance. While they were attempting to help, a vehicle hit the ambulance and both good Samaritans.

The male good Samaritan, 48-year-old Jerold Fimbres of Mesa, died at the scene. The female good Samaritan was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Officials say that the woman is expected to survive.

The man inside the ambulance sustained minor injuries and his female passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The male driver who crashed into the ambulance received minor injuries. It is currently under investigation whether or not the man was impaired at the time of the crash.

I-10 was closed at Casa Blanca Road for seven hours due to the crash. All lanes have since reopened.

DPS continues to investigate what led up to the crash.
