Retail chain Big Lots to close 13 locations across Arizona
PHOENIX – Big Lots will be closing over a dozen of its Arizona stores, a product of the company’s plans to shut down multiple locations across the country. Thirteen locations across the Grand Canyon State are planned to close sometime this year. Closing stores will have banners on their personal webpages indicating their closure and promoting a 20% off discount with limited exceptions.
Goat, dog removed from Dollar General store in Arizona
ELOY, Ariz. — A goat and dog walked into a Dollar General store Friday morning and needed some help checking out. The Eloy Fire District responded to the store after the animal friends walked into the facility and followed a patron into a bathroom. The store's staff locked the animals inside and waited for the fire department to arrive.
Tempe police arrest man for trespassing who had previously been feeding homeless in parks
TEMPE, Ariz. — A man who fed people experiencing homelessness at Tempe parks was arrested Friday for trespassing, according to the Tempe Police Department. Austin Davis received numerous warnings and citations for trespassing at Moeur Park, the first on July 1 for being in the park after hours and being "verbally aggressive" with park rangers. Davis was banned from the park for 30 days after receiving the trespassing citations, police said.

The quest to extinguish the flames of reckless driving on Glendale's streets has recently led to an arrest. As part of a crackdown by the Glendale Police Department's new "Street Racing Task Force," a 20-year-old man identified as Christian Valentino Moreno has been nabbed for his alleged daredevil antics on an off-road motorcycle. According to an official report, on the evening of July 19, 2024, a motor officer attempted to pull over Moreno for reckless driving within city bounds. However, the situation escalated when Moreno chose to not stop and engage to recklessly evade the police, which eventually caused the officers to terminate the pursuit for safety reasons.

Maricopa County invests more than $130K in dark-sky discovery center and other projects
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved more than $130,000 in funding this week. The largest portion of that money, about $100,000, will go toward the International Dark Sky Discovery Center in Fountain Hills. The county board’s Vice Chairman Thomas Galvin said the center teaches Maricopa County residents about the importance of dark skies for humans, animals and plants.

Human remains found by hiker on South Mountain
PHOENIX — A hiker found human remains while on South Mountain Saturday morning, officials with the Phoenix Police Department said. Police received a call from a park ranger just before 10 a.m. who said the hiker found what they thought were human remains. Officers responded and were able to confirm the remains were human.
