Two people were killed in a crash on Interstate 94 early Monday morning in Casco Township.

The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office said in a news release it responded to the crash shortly after 12:30 a.m.

The sheriff's office received reports of a crash near the eastbound rest area on Interstate 94 near Fred Moore Highway. Sheriff's deputies found two vehicles at the scene. One of the vehicles was engulfed in flames and could not immediately be identified. The other was identified as a 2018 black Chevy Cruze.

Both cars were occupied by a single driver who were each pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.

Minutes before the crash, the sheriff's office had received reports of someone driving west in the interstate's eastbound lane in a 1999 silver Chevy Silverado.

Erika Hyrnyk, Public Information Officer for the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, said deputies are still investigating whether the enflamed vehicle was the Chevy Silverado. She said law enforcement are also working to identify the victims in the crash. Their names will not be released until after their families have been informed.
