    With signs and banners declaring “No Pipeline” and “Stop the Sandpiper,” 40-50 people opposed to Enbridge Energy’s proposed oil pipeline ascross the state kicked off a ride to raise awareness of thed hazards of a pipeline in Minnesota lake country.

    The protest was led by Winona LaDuke and five Honor the Earth riders on horseback The proposed 610 mile route would cross parts of Hubbard and Cass counties and several American Indian reservations and wild ricing areas.

    25 years ago...

    Moondance Jam VIII drew an estimated 55,000 attendees to hear performers including Cheap Trick, Lynryd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., REO Speedwagon and others.

    Even with weather hardships, promoter Bill Bieloh only heard a handful of complaints.

    “I bet we didn’t hear from 25, and those were from people who couldn’t get into a campsite” Bieloh thought Lynyrd Skynyrd “was by far the best. I’m not a Hank Williams fan, but I asctually enjoyed him!”

    50 years ago...

    Laurie Abbott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Abbott, was crowned Paul Bunyan’s Sweetheart at Sweetheart Days in Hackensack. Named runner-up was Kris harrington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Harrington.
