Notice of transfer of administrative jurisdiction to land. Pursuant to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation Restoration Act (Act), the Secretary of Agriculture (Secretary), with the publication of this Notice, transfers administrative jurisdiction to approximately 11,760 acres of land (Federal land), located in the Chippewa National Forest in Cass County, Minnesota, to the Secretary of the Interior to be held in trust by the United States for the benefit of the Leech Lake Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, referred to in the Act as the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe (LLBO or Tribe). A table containing the legal descriptions of the lands to which administrative jurisdiction is hereby transferred, along with accompanying Exhibit A, identifying existing public roads, and Exhibit B, identifying existing Forest roads and a Forest trail that the Forest Service will continue to operate pursuant to the terms of reserved easement rights approved by the Tribe, are provided at the end of this notice.
Nearly 12K acres of Chippewa Forest transfers to Leech Lake Band
BENA — The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the Chippewa National Forest signed a decision memo last week selecting parcels for transfer from the forest. Over 11,700 forest acres are being transferred under the Leech Lake Reservation Restoration Act of 2020. In the 1940s and ‘50s, the U.S. Secretary of Interior authorized the transfer of 26,000 acres of allotted land within the reservation without the consent of tribal landowners.
Death investigation underway after body discovered in Cass County, Minnesota
WALKER, Minn. (KFGO) – The Cass County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the body of a missing Laporte man was discovered in a wooded area in Cass Lake. Sheriff Cory Aukes says James White, 60, was reported missing the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office June 24 after he hadn’t been seen for two weeks.

Suggested no wake on Cass County waterways
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is suggesting no or slow wake on Cass County lakes, rivers and waterways due to unusually high-water levels from recent rainfall events. Sheriff Bryan Welk said this spring and early summer several areas in the county have received several inches of rainfall creating high water issues on area waterways. “The sheriff’s office asks that boaters exercise restraint, good judgment, common sense and courtesy while operating on area lakes, especially those experiencing high water. Boat operators should reduce their speed while travelling in these sensitive areas and while operating in close to shore areas and channel ways.” The Cass County Sheriff’s Office thanks boaters and recreators in advance for their cooperation.
