Power Book II: Ghost focuses on numerous storylines and character arcs. One character who has undergone many changes in the show’s four seasons is Dru Tejada ( Lovell Adams-Gray ).

The popular Power spinoff is in its final season, which means all of your favorite characters’ fates will come to a head. Now, whether that means they will have happy endings or see their Christmas canceled remains to be seen, but we have seen how being in the drug game and having to deal with parents who want nothing but success in that business at the expense of their family dynamic affects them.

Ahead of the latest episode of Power Book II: Ghost , which he has already broken down here , Cassius Life’s Bernard “Beanz” Smalls spoke with Lovell Adams-Gray about Dru’s evolution, his relationship with his Cane (Woody McClain), working on the show, and that one time he played a young Barack Obama .

    Step into the interview below.

When we first met Dru, he was straddling the line between participating in the family business and still longing to do what he loved: art.

He was also trying to find love but dealt with a man who couldn’t love him publicly while seeing another person he loved lose his life at the hands of his mother, Monet (Mary J. Blige).

The relationship with his mother didn’t get any better after he learned she had his father killed, and from there, Dru decided he wanted to be his own man and make his own moves.

Gray spoke about Dru’s mental changes over the season and where he is now.

“I feel like he’s more in his hero era now. Whereas before we saw him being more of a passive observer, quiet, enigmatic, in the shadows, now he’s making an active choice to be a part,” Gray tells Cassius Life. “Be his own active person in his life and make his decisions, choose his path, and not let people get in away that. So it’s really exciting for me to see as an audience member and really exciting for me to play as an actor.”

There Is Still A Chance Dru & Cane Can See Eye-To-Eye Again

In the last two seasons, we have seen Dru’s relationship with Monet fall apart, and he is no longer cool with his brother, Cane.

When asked if he feels the brother’s relationship is beyond repair, he thinks the two Tejada brothers can patch things up.

“I think the right thing can bring them back together again. The right thing… I feel like there’s nothing that’s been said or done between the two of them that can’t be taken back, or you can’t build a bridge over that,” Gray explains. “You know what I mean? I think they have enough love for each other and enough love for the family as a whole and have gone through so much together, that they can get back.”

Of course, we had to ask if there were any real-life sibling rivalries in Gray’s life; Gray says he and his brother are very competitive.

“Oh, of course. My younger brother is an amazing dancer, and I look at him, and I’m like, “Look, man, I don’t know how you do it. And if I ever have to dance in a role, you’re the person I have to tap,” Gray said. “Because one time he saw me on stage and we had to do a dance, and he was like, “You were all right.” You know what I mean? I’m like, “How dare…” So ever since then, I’m like, “Now, every time I dance I got to go crazy.” So yeah, it’s been a nice little thing where we can still rag on each other for what we do.”

Working On Power Book II: Ghost Was His Julliard

I say that this has been my Juilliard. This has been my four years of school. Being able to have this much experience on the camera and be surrounded by so many amazing artists that I admire and respect and have taught me so much. Just how to conduct myself on set, and how to embody a character but not take it home with me, and just so many nuggets of truth that I’ve learned over the years and how to navigate and conduct myself in this professional setting.

Before he was Tejada, Gray used his acting ability to portray a young version of our favorite president, Barack Obama, in an episode of WB’s superhero show, DC Legends of Tomorrow .

In the episode, which has gone viral on social media after its original airing, Gray’s Barry, aka Young Barack, gets a visit from a time-traveling talking great ape called Gorilla Grodd, trying to wipe him from existence.

We asked Gray about his time working on the show and if he would like to do more comic book-based television series and movies.

“It was amazing, man. This was a time when these DC shows were just coming out, so you still had Green Arrow on air and stuff, and I watched all of them, so I was super amazed and excited to be there. Also, it was shot in Vancouver. I don’t know if you’ve been, but it’s an incredible city, an incredible space,” Gray said.

“And getting to do what I love in that environment with those people, such beautiful artists, generous artists, and just being able to be around them and do this cool run from a giant ape. And it’s not there, but it is. All that kind of stuff is cool. Playing Obama was really cool, a young Obama, just getting to embody some semblance of him in any way I could was really nice. And yeah, I would love to do more DC, Marvel things.”

He continues, “I grew up on this stuff. I’m watching X-Men right now, the cartoon, the OG cartoon. So it’s just been nice to relive and see who I could be in this world and who really stands out to me. And this is offside, but I’m really excited to see a rendition of the X-Men with Cyclops as a leader. Because when I was younger, I’m like, “Oh, I can’t stand Cyclops. It’s all about Wolverine.” And now I’m like, “No, Cyclops is actually a G.” He’s a good leader, he’s very powerful, and his story about how Havok and his dad, all those things, I want to see that fleshed out more. But anyways, that’s just me.”
