Last summer, Jaylen Brown signed the then-richest NBA contract — five-year, $304 million to be exact and he’s finally putting that money to good use by doing something revolutionary,

The Boston Celtic has reportedly turned down over $50 million in shoe endorsements to embark on his own path by starting his own brand. Dubbed 741, it’s a number sequence he’s seen often, and each one personally has a meaning to him of spiritual awakening, hard work, and new beginnings.

Plenty of hard work will have to go into 741 to become a formidable sneaker in the basketball space, but for Brown, ownership and starting anew is more important.

“The understanding of ownership and value is what’s important for the next generation of athletes. It’s time to think different and be different… create new ideas. It’s time to create more value for everyone involved, from athletes to consumers to employees and the communities that support them,” he said in the press release.

A big influence on Jaylen Brown’s decision to start his own venture was Kobe Bryant, who was starting to step away to create his own brand before his untimely passing.

And with Brown, always being a fan of Bryant’s greatness –and even settling the Lakers-Celtics rivalry by spearheading a Bryant and Gigi mural at a Boston Boys & Girls Club– he knew it was time to chart this own path that would last beyond his playing days.

“Kobe’s journey taught me about being fearless and pushing sports, along with society, to new heights. That’s the mindset I’m bringing to 741,” he added.

But creating his own signature sneaker is just the beginning. He’s spreading the wealth by allowing endorsed athletes to have more ownership and control over their brands and even hopes to employ people from underserved communities.

The self-funded brand has been Brown’s brainchild for two years, and even some self-starting nature may have rubbed off from his stint with Yeezy– which means we can expect some unique clothing as well.

“ I’ve poured everything into designing 741, and it’s been just as challenging and rewarding as anything I’ve done on the court ,” says Brown.

In the nature of changing the traditional business models the most important aspect to consumers is the price point of his first shoe, called the Rover in the “Black Moon” colorway. So the men’s sizes will run you a typical $200, but for big kids’ sizes you’ll only have to pay $70, roughly 40% or more below competitors.

The lowcut sneaker features golden bulbous detailing on both sides and two layers—one that features a non-stretchable inner layer and another with an abrasion-resistant yarn atop it.

The heat-sealed external and internal heel counters are said to provide as much traction as hiking boots while the midsole is made of a “hypergravity critical” EVA foam.
