Capitol Region Military Alliance of Virginia First Inaugural Business Meeting Held
On July 11, America's newest military advisory council, known as the Capitol Region Military Alliance of Virginia, held its inaugural meeting. The event brought together business leaders, government officials, military personnel, military service organizations, educators, and civic leaders to support national defense and enhance the quality of life in our region. CaRMA serves the three military installations of Fort Gregg-Adams, Fort Barfoot, and Defense Supply Center - Richmond, and brings business, government, military, military service organizations, education, civic leaders together to support national defense and quality of life for the region. The initiative is supported by the three installations, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Crater Planning District Commission, local governments that surround the installations, and chambers of commerce that serve the region. CaRMA-VA is a start-up organization chartered on February 1, 2024.
State offering $2 million in grants for historic restoration/rehab projects
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Historical Commission announced a new grant to help cover the cost of restoring National Register-listed historic properties in the state. Overall, $2 million is available from the Historic Property/Land Acquisition Fund (HPLAF) Grant Program this year. Applications are open now through Aug. 31. Four local summer diving teams in the GazetteLeader’s coverage areas won division championships in the Northern Virginia Swimming League. The Oakton Otters, with a 4-1 record, finished first in Division I for the third year in a row. Overall the division crown was the team’s fourth straight, winning Division II in 2021.
Greenwood’s Maya Gantt to run at Lees-McRae College
Maya Gantt of Greenwood High School will be moving to Banner Elk, North Carolina to pursue running cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field at Lees-McRae College. During high school, Gantt participated in the standard 5000m (3.1 miles) cross country run in the fall and in spring track events such as the 800m run, 1600m run, 3200m run, and the 4x800m relay.
