Flash drought possible in the coming days across KAKEland
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Our nice stretch of below average temperatures is about to quickly come to an end as the triple digits are set to return by the end of the weekend. Highs are expected to soar back into the century mark across KAKEland starting on Sunday, and they will remain there well into the start of August. This increase in heat will also bring dry weather, and both of these things could result in a flash drought across parts of the U.S.

Kans for Kids will be celebrating its 30th birthday in October. Still, the Fighting Cancer Foundation continues to come up with new ways to assist area kids who are battling cancer. On Saturday, Aug. 17, Kans for Kids will host its first sporting clays benefit tournament at LaSada Lodge south of Russell. Madison’s Boomtown Cafe to close, future of Harry C’s Gasoline Alley to be evaluated
One eatery in downtown Madison is closing its doors, and the long-term future of another is unclear. Boomtown Cafe will close after lunch Aug. 2 after 14 months of operation. In a social media post, the restaurant says “we simply are not generating enough sales to support continued operations.” Owners are encouraging people who may be interested in taking over the Boomtown operations to reach out and discuss plans.

Wichita-area woman dies following crash in Cowley County
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (KAKE) - A 23-year-old suburban Wichita woman has died following a crash in Cowley County this week, the local sheriff says. The accident happened at around 10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 77 and 242nd Road, which is north of Arkansas City. Sheriff David Falletti said Reyna Batrez was driving on 242nd Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at the highway.
