It's raining cats: Six Kansas City kitties you can adopt right now

Are you disappointed that Kansas City isn't going to get a stadium in the Crossroads? Console yourself with a new cat!
Are you thrilled that Kansas City isn't going to get a stadium in the Crossroads? Celebrate with a new cat!
Adopting a cat is the best thing you can do in just about any situation, and these five guys and gals are lying around in a local shelter right now, waiting for you to come by and pick them up.
Betsy
First up, from Meowy Matchmakers, is Betsy. Now Betsy tends to be an older woman's name and that's fitting because Betsy, the cat, is on the older side too. She's about 10 or 11. Betsy's previous owner had to give her up unfortunately, and Betsy had a hard time at first with her foster mom. Betsy came out of the gate hissing, biting, and scratching, but after some time, finally realizing her old home was gone, she's shown that she's actually a sweet cat. She might show some nastiness with you at first too, but give her some time and space and soon you'll have a dear cat on your hands.
Nowadays, Betsy loves to be pet and her favorite spot in the world is her heated bed. If you have cats, I'd strongly recommend heated beds. It sounds ridiculous, but I have two cats and four heated beds. They love them and use all four. Sometimes I wish I had a heated bed too.
Betsy would love a scratching post or a kitty condo and a sunny window to look out of. She'd also love your pets and a calm environment that she could settle in for the rest of her days. You can learn more about Betsy, and perhaps get in touch with Meowy Matchmakers about her, with this link.
Mara
Next up, from Cats Pawjamas (don't you love the names of cat rescue organizations?), is Mara. Mara was featured on these pages about six months ago, has been at Cats Pawjamas for a year and a half, and still isn't adopted. Why not? It certainly isn't her temperament. She's the sweetest cat in the world, known for licking the faces of the humans she loves. It is true that black cats are harder to adopt, but Mara is a cutie so that doesn't really explain it either. No, it is probably the snot.
Mara has a chronic URI condition that gives her a chronically snotty nose. Antiviral treatments help her a lot, and although they can be an inconvenience to give, as Cats Pawjamas puts it, it is a small price to pay to have as loving of a cat as Mara. I had a cat once with feline herpes, yes herpes, which caused her to get a lot of boogers. After a while, I began to find it oddly enjoyable to pick them out for her. Yes, cat people can be strange. So just imagine the joy you'll get taking a warm cloth and cleaning off that snotty nose of hers. Plus your spouse will finally get off your back about getting a hobby.
Next up, from The Animal Rescue Alliance (TARA), is Simon Cat. I think he is called "Simon Cat" because TARA also has a dog up for adoption named Simon.
How'd a dog get in here?
Simon the cat, despite looking like an older cat in his picture, is only about two. He's a sweet, chatty guy that loves to play, loves people, loves to eat--kind of a gluttonous little dude who lives his best life.
Simon is FIV+. Most FIV+ cats live full, healthy lives, but it does mean he should either be your only cat or he should only live with other cats with FIV+. There's plenty of FIV+ cats in my past posts if you're interested in adopting a clowder of FIV+ cats.
What's better than adopting a cat? Adopting two cats! Next, from The Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter we have Mufasa and Channing. Mufasa, the gray long-haired cat, and Channing, the little tabby, are a bonded pair. Usually when you see a bonded pair, they might be two cats who bonded after living with a single owner or they might be siblings (or mother/kitten) who wouldn't be happy separated. These two, however, found each other on their own. They were found out on the streets, together, best of pals, in a wonderful Lady and the Tramp story that you have an opportunity to give a happy ending to. Probably not healthy for them but just imagine these two sharing some spaghetti.
Channing is about a year old and looks to be part Abyssinian. She's social and affectionate. Mufasa is about five (four years Channing's senior--the scandal!) and is on the shy side but still loves affection from the people in his life.
You can learn more about these two by filling out the Friends of Parkville's pre-adoption application here. Filling it out doesn't obligate you to anything.
Merlin
Last but not least, from Great Plains SPCA, we have a cat for people who want a little magic in their life, Merlin. Merlin had a tough time of it before finding his way to Great Plains SPCA. He was attacked by another cat at his old house and has moved around a bit after that.
Given his past run-ins with cats, he'd be fine being the only cat at your house. However, since arriving at Great Plains, he's learned that most of his species are actually pretty cool. So he'd likely be fine if you already have a kind, non-aggressive cat or two.
Because of all the chaos that has been in his life, he is on the shy side, but a patient family with a quiet home who is willing to give him some time to blossom, would be greatly rewarded with a sweet, affectionate friend in the end. And did you see how cute he is?
That's it for this week. Want to look at more cats? Check out my profile here. Many of the cats featured on past posts are still available and still cute!
