Southie Shoutout: Cam Askew Announces His Retirement from ECHL
Southie native Cam Askew, 27, son of Jacqui Lyons and Brian Askew, recently announced his retirement from the ECHL. While with the ECHL, the 6’3 forward had a successful career, with 86 goals and 77 assists, earning him playtime in 313 regular seasons and 21 Kelly Cup Playoff games, where he put up three goals and six assists for nine points. City of Boston Hosts Olympic Swimmers, Kicks Off International Water Safety Day Events
BOSTON – Tuesday, May 14, 2024 – Today, the City of Boston was joined by Olympic swimmers Cullen Jones and Janelle Atkinson to kick off a series of events to raise awareness of International Water Safety Day, an annual day of recognition to bring global awareness about drowning prevention. The morning reception kicks off two days of events that will include visits to two Boston Public Schools, a technique clinic for youth at the BCYF Flaherty Pool in Roslindale, and a water safety festival and swim lesson at the BCYF Mattahunt Community Center in Mattapan. This series of events is the latest in the City of Boston’s Swim Safe campaign that strives to improve water safety by making swim lessons and water access top priorities.

Councilor Flynn Calls for Hearing to Discuss Expanding Urban Tree Canopy in District 2
BOSTON – Boston City Councilor Flynn has filed for a hearing to discuss expanding the urban tree canopy in District 2. Late last year, the Boston City Council passed the tree protection ordinance, which regulates the process of tree removals, trimming, and maintenance. This hearing aims to identify areas that would be suitable for new tree plants, select appropriate tree species for our environment, and ensure the City has sufficient staffing to plant and maintain the trees.

World’s Best Cliff Divers Return to Boston for the only U.S. Stop in Global Spectacle’s 15th Season. Boston, MA (May 8, 2024) – The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series reaches a monumental milestone as it makes its third consecutive return to the Boston Harbor, marking its 100th event since the inception of the series in 2009. The practice round will take place on Friday, June 7th starting at 12:00p until 4:00p. On Saturday, June 8th from noon until 4p, the adrenaline-fueled diving competition will captivate Bostonians atop the rooftop of the iconic Institute of Contemporary Art Boston (ICA) in the vibrant Seaport neighborhood, serving as the second stop of the series.

Now, here’s something you don’t see every day. We’ve been wondering about the Southie Coyote’s whereabouts recently. Just a few years ago, the coyote was like a local celebrity hanging out in broad daylight in Moakley Park or taking walks along the beach unphased by the nearby people watching him/her. Well, on Tuesday morning, Caught in Southie was sent a video of the coyote in Boston Harbor off of Castle Island swimming, yes, swimming, not struggling at all, swimming like a champ.
