    Background

At around 7:27 p.m. on July 28, officers came to the 2900 block of Haig Street after getting a report of a person lying on a picnic table under a pavilion at a park.

The caller told 911 that the person was not moving and they had heard what they thought were fireworks around an hour earlier. The caller inspected further and noticed the victim was not breathing and was suffering from gunshot wounds.

At the scene, investigators found the victim who was identified as 19-year-old Jakayla Marie Goode. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Goode’s death was the 22nd homicide of 2024 in Greensboro.
