Battery in child’s potty training book sparks fire inside NC family’s car, fire officials say

MORGANTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A small battery inside a children’s “sound book” sparked a fire that gutted the interior of a car in a North Carolina county this week, officials said.

The blaze happened Sunday in Burke County after the book was left under a child’s seat in the rear seating area of the car, according to a news release from George Hildebran Fire & Rescue Department in the Connelly Springs area.

The blaze began soon after the child and family exited the car and went inside their home, the fire department news release said.

The release included a photo of the book “JJ’s Potty Time” and several images of the burned seat, car and book.

The Burke County Fire Marshals Office investigated and said a “button battery” inside the children’s book caused the fire, the news release said.

No one was injured.
