FAISON, N.C. (WNCT/WNCN) – A woman died in a fiery crash that appeared to involve a single car Saturday morning on Interstate-40 eastbound near Warsaw at the Duplin and Sampson County line.

Numerous emergency crews were on the scene near Faison until the highway finally reopened around 3 p.m.

According to a Facebook post from Faison Fire, around 10:45 a.m., I-40 eastbound between exit 355 at Faison and exit 364 at Warsaw was closed. I-40 westbound was down to one lane of travel in the same area.

The Sampson Independent reported that a 33-year-old Wendell woman died in the crash near N.C. 402. The newspaper had a photo of a burned-out vehicle that had crashed into a highway overpass support in the median of the highway — between two guardrails.

Speed and reckless driving were factors in the wreck, according to The Sampson Independent .

The wreck caused major traffic backups this holiday weekend, up to three miles.

Officials said a detour was set up while the highway was closed.

CBS 17 has reached out to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for information about the wreck.
