WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WNCN) — Scotty Jones loves playing basketball, especially with his dad. He’s a Wake Forest High School sophomore who plays point and shooting guard.

“I love it when he rebounds for me. He has been there my whole entire journey, and I wouldn’t be here without him,” said Jones.

And like many players his age, he’s “just looking to make a name for myself,” Jones said.

And now, thanks to the North Carolina State Board of Education, that could be possible while also earning some money on the side.

The Board of Education approved a proposed new rule allowing public school students to sign name, image, and likeness deals beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. Former professional basketball player and Fire Ball Basketball Academy owner Jared “JG” Grady says the game is changing.

“It’s a great opportunity to use their name, image, and likeness to gain revenue and help their families out,” said Grady.

Grady acknowledged there are some pros and cons.

“It’s putting business on middle and high school basketball a lot earlier than some kids and families can manage,” Grady said.

He encourages his students to surround themselves with trustworthy people, and Scotty’s mom says they have that in place.

“Not only do they work with their coaches, but it’s up to them to do the work they need to be successful outside of that,” said Scotty’s mom, Jessica Jones.

This is one reason she feels NIL will be positive, along with keeping academics a priority.

“Our affirmations are in the morning: ‘What is your purpose in school?’ He says, ‘To get good grades so I can get a scholarship,'” Grady said.

Scotty Jones is working towards a full-ride basketball scholarship. His primary focus is working hard until he can profit from his image next season.

The state board will take public comment from October 1 until December 6. They say a virtual public hearing will be held on November 8, and they’re expecting to take a vote on January 9.
