The storm system that moved ashore on Monday afternoon, dumped more than 18 inches of rain in New Hanover County, and more than 15 inches in parts of Brunswick County, according to North Carolina Emergency Management.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality advised against swimming at several beaches. Those beaches are in New Hanover, Carteret and Brunswick counties.
The agency’s Division of Marine Fisheries also advised against swimming near Doe Drive in Emerald Isle due to the town pumping stormwater into the ocean. On Tuesday, officials added more areas — both ocean-side and sound-side — to the swimming advisory.
According to a release, floodwaters are being pumped into the ocean at Fawn Drive, 7th Street and 15th Street in Emerald Isle, as well as into the sound at Channel Drive.
“These waters can contain pollutants such as waste from wildlife and pets, oil and gasoline from parking lots and waste from septic systems or sewers,” a N.C. Department of Environmental Quality news release said.
Beaches in Brunswick and New Hanover counties where people should not swim include:
Holden Beach
Long Beach
Oak Island
Caswell Beach
Bald Head Island
Kure Beach
Carolina Beach
Wrightsville Beach
“Avoid swimming near ocean outfalls, including the wet sand where the floodwater is pumped,” state officials said.
Swimmers should avoid the waters until testing has indicated they are likely safe.
Officials said testing will begin on Tuesday and authorities will later release information about when it is safe for swimming.

I realize they are talking about the flood water being pumped into the ocean and they are wanting it tested before ppl swim, that said I'm wondering why they aren't warning the public about all the lumber, nails, and construction debris that has been washed away and is just sitting on our beaches right now? when will clean up begin? yesterday morning, first morning after then storm, I went out to the beach and you couldn't even drive into the public parking lot or walk out onto the beach, so I myself, spent almost 2hours getting up all the lumber I could without help bc so many ppl just walked or drove by without even offering to help! Just letting the next hightide come and wash it in and out and let it all embed in our beach to hurt ppl and animals, domestic and wildlife!
