CAPE CARTERET, N.C. (WNCT) – National Weather Services meteorologists confirmed a tornado touched down near Cape Carteret Monday evening.

The tornado was rated an EF-0 with maximum winds of 60 mph.  The NWS conducted a storm survey Tuesday and discovered damage consistent with a tornado. Meteorologists said the tornado hit one mile East/Southeast of Cape Carteret.

A tornado warning was issued for Carteret County at 7:10 p.m. for several communities in Southwestern Carteret County and East Central Onslow County.  The tornado briefly touched down around 7:26 p.m.

According to the NWS survey, the tornado traveled less than a mile. Damage was noted near the intersection of Hunting Bay Drive and Bayview Court.  Roof and shingle damage was found in the area, as well.

“Several trees were also snapped about 40 feet up from the base,” the NWS storm survey report stated.

Lighter damage was discovered across Easy Street and Bayshore Drive. No tornado-related damage was found in Emerald Isle, the National Weather Service survey team said.

WNCT 9’s Chief Meteorologist Jerry Jackson tracked the storm Monday evening as it moved ashore and across the county.

The low-pressure system responsible for the weak tornado also caused copious amounts of rain across portions of the Crystal Coast.
