RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – An investigation is underway after packages filled with a white powdery substance were sent to the North Carolina Board of Elections over the weekend.

The elections board confirmed this during a virtual press briefing on Monday morning.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, N.C. officials said.

This comes less than a week after the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced their investigation into the origin of suspicious packages that were sent to or received by election officials in over 15 states, The Associated Press reported on Sept. 17.

The FBI is investigating suspicious packages sent to election officials in more than 15 states

These packages were mailed to officials in Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York and Rhode Island. Meanwhile, Mississippi authorities confirmed a package was delivered last Monday, while the Connecticut Secretary of State said her office had been alerted by the FBI of a package that was intercepted.

North Carolina is now the 20th state to face this kind of threat ahead of the 2024 election in November.
