RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Multiple fundraising efforts are happening right now to help those affected by Helene. While it’s a devastating time for many in the Southeast, the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Carolina said scammers see it as a time of opportunity to target those who are vulnerable.

“Unfortunately there are going to be people that take advantage of the situation so there’s going to be social posts, there might even be ads saying, hey donate here we’ll distribute it, we’ll get the money to the people that need it the most, and that’s not always the case,” said Alyssa Parker, Director of Communications for the BBB.

“So, that’s why it’s incredibly important to make sure that you’re working with a legitimate organization and making sure that you’re asking those questions,” Parker added.

She outlined what some of those questions are and different ways to verify that your money is going toward the right cause.

“The first thing that we really suggest is to find those reputable websites. One of the best things you can do right now is look at the North Carolina Disaster Recovery Fund,” said Parker. “You can go to nc.gov/donate that’s a really great one.”

Parker also said it’s worthwhile to reach out to the Red Cross, United Way, and see where their efforts are going.

“It’s just really important to do your research,” she emphasized.

Parker said asking questions about where money is a good practice when donating to local churches or organizations.

As for crowdsourcing and crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe, Parker says check to make sure accounts are verified first.

“GoFundMe, in particular, does a really great job at verifying certain pages so you really want to make sure that if you do see a GoFundMe—see if it’s verified. If not, you can always go back and donate to the Red Cross, you can donate to the United Way, you can donate to the Disaster Relief Fund,” said Parker.

She also said to be leery of organizations that say 100% of donations go to people in need.

“When you come across an organization that says 100% is going to go the people that are in need, kind of a red flag,” said Parker. “Typically not always 100% goes to it so just make sure that you’re asking those questions, kind of keep it in the back of your mind and just make sure that you’re working with legitimate organizations.”

Parker also says to pay close attention to names of organizations. She says a lot of times scammers will set up a similar name to reputable organizations.

A spokesperson for GoFundMe told CBS 17 they have launched a centralized hub with all verified fundraisers related to Helene here:
