DOTHAN, Ala. ( WDHN ) — An assistant principal from Dothan represented Alabama during the 2024 National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Trailblazing Leadership Week in the nation’s capital.

Dothan City Schools (DCS) announced Tuesday that Charles Longshore, the Assistant Principal at Dothan Preparatory Academy, could represent his state after being named the Alabama Assistant Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP).

Longshore was chosen from several applicants across the state of Alabama.

During Trailblazing Leadership Week, the NASSP chose the National Assistant Principal of the Year.

“It was the most amazing professional experience of my career,” Longshore said. “Across the four days of the conference, I was able to have conversations with so many amazing educators and NASSP board members. I gained some new perspectives, but I also learned that we experience the same challenges as most schools across the country.

“The practices we have at DPA and across DCS – we do a lot of things as well as, if not better than, most schools that also produced state winners.  I left feeling very appreciated, but also inspired to be an even better administrator.”

According to DCS, Longshore has had several positive effects on Dothan Preparatory Academy during his time as assistant principal, including changing the school’s culture through inspiration and positive reinforcement.
