BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Freedom Preparatory Academy announced the approval of its Montgomery and Titusville charter application, marking a possible expansion of the education system into the Wiregrass region.

The application received conditional approval from the Alabama Public Charter School Commissions, which will pave the way for the school’s opening in the 2025-26 school year.

Freedom Prep serves over 2,000 students in grades PreK through 12 across five schools in Memphis, and describes its curriculum as “dedicated to transforming education for students of color across the South.”

The approval announcement comes as the organization prepares for the groundbreaking ceremony of its first Alabama school campus on Thursday.

Freedom Prep Birmingham is set to open its doors in Fall 2024 for kindergarten and first graders. The school will be housed in the historic Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School in the Titusville community.

“The decision to open a school in Montgomery was a heart decision. We feel a deep calling to open Freedom Prep schools in Alabama as it is the birthplace of the civil rights movement. We are committed to carrying the torch of the civil rights movement by ensuring that all students have the opportunity to excel in college and in life,” said Roblin J. Webb, Freedom Prep’s CEO and Founder.

Freedom Prep is also opening a new elementary school in the Titusville community. Titusville has a rich history as a hub for African American achievement and leadership. Freedom Prep will provide students with direct exposure to diverse opportunities, in order to ensure that each student is equipped with the knowledge and self-confidence that is necessary to succeed.

“The Titusville Community has a legacy of producing great African American leaders, including
former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Birmingham Mayor William Bell, Judge
Carole Smitherman, and Senator Rodger Smitherman,” says Dr. Ronald Bayles, board chair of
FPA Alabama. “These leaders began their educational journeys in Titusville. As we build the
new Freedom Prep campus at the historic site of Our Lady of Fatima, we’re picking up the torch
to light the way for the next generation, believing that education is a civil right.”
