BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Dangerous exhibition driving, lewd behavior, loitering and excessive noise violations are among the reasons cited for why the city of Birmingham has taken legal action against downtown nightclub CRU Lounge.

“Our thing is to make sure that we’re actually heard on the facts and on the merits and I think once they hear the facts and the merits, they will see that they were not involved in any of this,” said CRU Lounge attorney Julian Hendrix.

Hendrix said these actions are not associated with the business, saying the business has taken efforts to prevent anything of the sort.

“CRU did not create this environment. In fact, they’ve taken multiple efforts to make sure that they secure the facility,” said Hendrix.

According to the city, CRU Lounge has failed to take steps or cut down on the illegal activity on their property, claiming Birmingham police have responded to calls related to a shooting and multiple traffic issues.

Birmingham City Councilor Hunter Williams said these are actions the city is trying to crack down on.

“Obviously, their attorney is going to have an opinion to try to defend them and their actions, but I think that the public safety hearing really speaks for itself,” said Councilor Williams.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, council voted to move forward with a show cause hearing for CRU Lounge. The show cause hearing is set for June 18 at 9:30 a.m.
