BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Southwest Airlines will add two nonstop destinations from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in the fall for market testing.

According to the Birmingham Airport Authority, passengers will have the chance to fly nonstop on Southwest from Birmingham to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Nashville International Airport in November. Flights to Nashville are scheduled to occur until at least early January.

“This is an opportunity to show Southwest that this community can and will support additional
nonstop flights,” said President and CEO of the Birmingham Airport Authority Ron Mathieu in a statement.

With those additions, passengers will have the chance to reach 20 airports in 17 U.S. cities. The Birmingham Airport Authority stated enplanements were up 11% in April 2024 compared to the previous April.

Southwest is also offering flights between Birmingham and Milwaukee for Alabama football’s game at Wisconsin on Sept. 14. The flight from Birmingham to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport takes off at noon Sept. 13 for a 2 p.m. arrival. Crimson Tide fans will have the chance to return home Sept. 15 with a 1 p.m. departure out of Milwaukee. That flight is expected to land in Birmingham at 2:50 p.m.
