According to Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald, police were dispatched around 2:40 a.m. to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1100 block of Third Avenue West. Officers arrived at the Exxon gas station in that block and saw a man lying unresponsive in its parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound.

The gas station was closed when the shooting occurred. The El Centenario Nightclub across the street, however, was open at the time. Birmingham Police Department detectives will search the area for surveillance cameras.
