HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has identified a man killed in an on-duty police shooting Saturday in Huntsville.

ALEA identified the man as Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, 38, of Decatur. Authorities said he was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) said officers responded to a domestic violence call before 10 a.m. Saturday.

Officers said the man fired at a woman who was trying to run while in front of an HPD officer. HPD said an officer shot at the man, now identified as Sanders, and he died.

No officers were injured in the incident. HPD requested the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation lead the investigation after the shooting.

News 19 Bureau Chief Whitney Leibold talked with HPD on the scene. Officers told her the incident started around 9:30 a.m. when they were called about a domestic situation at the Reserve at Research Park and Waterstone apartment complex. As soon as officers arrived, they heard gunshots.

Whitney said officers were able to get a woman and child out of the apartment and a man then barricaded himself inside the apartment. She was also told the woman was injured and both she and the child were taken to the hospital.

ALEA said no further information is available at this time. The agency said that the findings of its investigation will be turned over to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office once complete.
