    Where to recycle in central Alabama

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — When it comes to recycling, central Alabama residents have various options.

    Here’s a list of recycling locations across central Alabama, as well as what items they will and will not accept:

    ‘Celebrate the Family Expo’ scheduled for September 14 in Birmingham
    • The Montevallo Recycling Center
      • Accepted items:
        • All types of paper
        • All types of cardboard
        • Plastics #1, #2 and #5
        • All types of cans
      • Items not accepted:
        • Glass
        • Bulky plastic items
        • Styrofoam
        • Garden hoses, ropes, extension cords or chains
        • CRT TVs or monitors
        • Household garbage
        • Food waste
    • City of Tuscaloosa Recycling Program
      • Accepted items:
        • Aluminum cans
        • All types of paper
        • Cardboard boxes
        • Electronics (drop off at Curry Complex)
        • Glass (drop off at specified locations )
        • Plastics #1 and #2
        • Steel “tin” soup cans
      • Items not accepted:
        • Aluminum foil items
        • Clothes hangers
        • Diapers
        • Construction materials
        • Plastics #3- #7
        • Plastic film
        • Household and construction garbage

    The Alabama Department of Environmental Management recently awarded $2.5 million in recycling grants to cities, counties, agencies and nonprofits across the state. The grants were funded by the Alabama Recycling Fund, which is made possible by the Solid Wastes and Recyclable Materials Management Act.
