TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Alabama Athletics announced it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of women’s varsity sports at the university throughout the 2024-25 academic year.

The athletics department stated the celebration will include special events, ticket offers, commemorative videos and reunions for former women student-athletes.

“It’s exciting to be at a place like the University of Alabama during a time when we are celebrating 50 years of women’s varsity athletics,” Greg Byrne, director of athletics at Alabama, said in a statement. “Women’s athletics has only strengthened our athletic department and the accomplishments and strides that have been made should be a source of pride. I’m thrilled to be a part in leading this yearlong campaign that highlights their contributions to our department.”
