BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) – Crunch Fitness locations in the Birmingham area are hosting an opportunity Wednesday to pay tribute to the people who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks 23 years ago.

Tanner Feeney, general manager of Crunch Fitness Tuscaloosa, and Tayler Bircheat, assistant general manager of that location, joined CBS 42 Morning News on Saturday to talk about the event. Feeney said it started in 2015.

“We wanted to build awareness of that day. The ones that lost their lives and risked their lives as first responders that day,” Feeney said. “This is an event that we can do just to help commemorate and keep the awareness of what we’re trying to achieve here for all of the people that risked their lives that day.”

Feeney and Bircheat said they have participated in the event. Members and non-members with a day pass can stop by any Crunch Fitness location to complete the climb.

“It means everything to us,” Bircheat said. “Us being a gym and having the equipment there just gives us a perfect opportunity to give back and show them how much it means to us by them doing this.”

Bircheat said it can take anywhere from 35 minutes to over an hour, depending on fitness level, to climb the stair climber and complete the challenge with or without first responder equipment on.

Wednesday’s event is any time from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at any Crunch Fitness location.
