( iSeeCars ) – Cargo capacity is one of the key reasons to purchase an SUV. With their taller, squared-off styling, SUVs offer more cargo room than a sedan or wagon, along with the added flexibility of having three rows of seats in midsize and full-size SUVs. Drivers can increase storage space in three-row models by folding the third-row seats down. They can also take full advantage of an SUV’s maximum cargo area offered behind the first row when folding the third and second rows down.

It should be noted that while the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has created a set of recommended practices for automakers to use when determining the maximum cubic feet of storage, there is no requirement that automakers follow these guidelines. This means comparing the cargo capacity of two or more SUVs may not represent a consistent methodology for how those numbers were derived. As an example, some automakers may measure cargo space from the floor to the top of the rear seats to not compromise rear visibility while others can measure from floor to roof to improve their cargo capacity number. And because automakers don’t disclose their measurement techniques there’s no way to know which automakers are using what technique to achieve their cargo capacity numbers.

This maximum cubic feet of cargo space is the metric used to rank SUVs on this page. Buyers seeking a combination of minivan-like passenger capacity and off-road capability should consider large or midsize models like the Chevy Traverse, Jeep Wagoneer or Nissan Armada. If a two-row SUV will satisfy your passenger needs you can get a midsize or smaller model, powered by a turbo four-cylinder or V6 engine offering better fuel efficiency, such as the Ford Edge or Honda Passport.

The best fuel economy figures are offered by compact and subcompact SUVs. These models may not have V8 engine options or as much cargo and towing capacity as larger SUVs, but they remain utility vehicles, with available all-wheel drive for inclement weather and foldable rear seats to maximize cargo capacity. Better still, their high mpg ratings make them cost-effective road trip vehicles, And in recent model years they’ve started to include everything from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to advanced safety features in their relatively low starting prices.

Below you can browse every SUV segment, with each model ranked by maximum cargo capacity.
