BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Week 2 of the college football season was a whirlwind as there were upsets that left many stunned and two lopsided top-25 matchups.

No. 3 Texas and No. 10 Michigan battled it out in the Big House to begin the day, and it was utter domination by the Longhorns all game. The Longhorn defense stifled the Wolverines and the offense got going early for Texas. Quinn Ewers threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Texas held running back Donovan Edwards to 41 yards on eight carries and forced walk-on Davis Warren to throw the ball, resulting in two interceptions.

No. 14 Tennessee went on the road to face No. 24 NC State in an SEC versus ACC showdown, and it was the Volunteers who steamrolled the Wolfpack, 51-10. Vols running back Dylan Sampson ran for 132 yards and two scores on 20 carries. Freshman Nico Iamaleava was 16-of-23 for 211 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

AP Top 25: Alabama holds steady at No. 4

The biggest upset of the weekend was Northern Illinois going into South Bend and stunning No. 5 Notre Dame, 16-14. The Huskies stunned the Irish with a field goal to take the lead with 30 seconds to go. The Irish then put themselves in position for a 62-yard field goal, but the Huskies blocked it and sealed its biggest win in program history.

Auburn was stunned at home by California, 21-14. Quarterback Payton Thorne threw four interceptions in the loss. California quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 25-for-36 with 233 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Week 3 features two top-25 games with the first one coming Friday between Arizona and Kansas State. College Gameday will be in Columbia, South Carolina, as the Gamecocks host LSU.
