MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( WREG ) — A mother is in jail after her 6-year-old child was caught at a Memphis-area school with a gun in their backpack Tuesday, police say.

Tyranny Gray, 26, is charged with aggravated child abuse – neglect. She is being held in jail on $25,000 bond.

According to police, officers responded to Germanshire Elementary School regarding an armed party call.

Reports state that a kindergarten teacher was helping her students pack up their belongings for the day when she noticed one of her student’s backpack was unusually heavy.

The teacher said when she put the backpack down, she heard a sound similar to a metal object hitting the ground. That is when she said she looked inside and saw a black Taurus G2C 9mm handgun.

The backpack was then taken to the main office. Memphis police and Gray called to the scene.

Gray reportedly claimed ownership of the unloaded gun and showed officers photos of the same weapon with the serial number. Officers said she had the gun hidden under the couch inside her home.

At that time, Gray was taken into custody. Gray is due in court Thursday morning.
