New Birmingham program to provide affordable housing

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A new program will provide affordable housing to people in need across Birmingham.

It’s called Safe Houses of Birmingham. It’s through a partnership with the Rebirth Community Corporation and other organizations.

The first home is complete and ready for occupancy. Officials said Tuesday the program will help people who need help in several situations.

“Our safe houses are going to house different types of people,” program manager Myles Taylor said. “Some of them will house victims of domestic violence, some of them will be short-term and temporary housing for people that are out of the justice system or suffering homelessness, and some of them are going to be where we take them in with workforce development to help them get back on their feet and start over.”

Officials plan to have 56 total homes.
