BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A Birmingham City Schools teacher received a special surprise Tuesday.

Birmingham Bowl staff presented Jackson-Olin High School family and consumer science teacher Sarah Moland with the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers honor. Moland was named 2024 BCS Secondary Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the 2024-25 Alabama Teacher of the Year.

“It’s a good feeling to be recognized for what you do every day that you enjoy doing,” Moland said. “So it’s really good to recognized for something that you are not really trying hard for. I didn’t try to be the teacher of the year. That was never my goal. I just get up every day and do what I enjoy doing.”

The 18th Birmingham Bowl will be played at Protective Stadium on Dec. 27.
