JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A miner was killed in a work-related accident Tuesday night at the Oak Grove Mine.

According to the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), 52-year-old Jose Lara was killed in the accident and leaves behind a wife and three children.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Brother Lara, and we are committed to uncovering the details of his death to help prevent future tragedies,” UMWA International President Cecil Roberts said. “Please join us in keeping the Lara family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Operations at the mine are suspended while an investigation into the accident is completed.

This is the ninth coal mine fatality of 2024 and first in Alabama, according to the UMWA.
