BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Suspects who had been arrested earlier this year in connection to the death of a 20-year-old woman in Birmingham are now facing capital murder charges.

On Sept. 13, a grand jury indicted Giovonnie Clapp, Blair Green, Teja Lewis, Si’Nya McCall and Airana Lashay Robinson on capital murder charges. Two other suspects, Brandon Pope and Jeremiah McDowell, had already been charged with capital murder.

Jackson, 20, was found shot to death in the woods on Feb. 26. According to the Birmingham Police Department, who claimed that Jackson was sexually assaulted before she died, all of the suspects were acquaintances of Jackson.

Evidence portal pushed to the public amid Birmingham mass shooting investigation

“The facts of this case are deplorable and sickening,” BPD Chief Scott Thurmond said at the time of the arrests . “Saddest of all, they were made public by the suspects’ decision to videotape portions of this horrific act.”

Gail Maddox Trotter, Jackson’s mother, said the young mother was full of life and loved her family.

“She had a baby and didn’t deserve what happened to her,” Trotter said in an interview with CBS 42’s Sherri Jackson .

All suspects remain in the Jefferson County Jail on no bond.
