DOUBLE SPRINGS, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Winston County Cooperative is hosting an event called “Farmer for a Day” on Saturday. It is a free event that is happening at City Fest in Double Springs to give children a chance to learn about farming and agriculture as a future career.

Winston County Extension Coordinator Zack Brannon joined CBS 42 Morning News on Saturday to talk about the event. He said it was an idea by Tina Burnett, the administrative coordinator for the county’s soil and water board. This is the first time the organization is doing its own event.

“She kind of saw this as an idea from a group out of Tennessee that had tried something similar, and we wanted to bring that back to Winston County,” Brannon said.

He said they decided to host it during City Fest. For free, children can go step by step and learn the process of farm-to-table.

“It’s an educational thing,” Brannon said, “not only for the kids, but for the parents to see how important ag is not only to our county, but our state when kids and their families are able to go through this whole process and really see that farm-to-table experience.”

Brannon said there’s a big disconnect between the farm and what actually happens when you get your food to eat. He said right now, under 2% of the population does farming as a career.

“We’re two, three and four generations separated from the farm,” Brannon said. “We want the kids and parents to know that farmers are doing the right things. They are very good stewards of the land and resources they have.”

The booth will be set up at City Fest from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to join the Winston County Cooperative on Main Street in Double Springs.
