    Kelvin Datcher wins Alabama House District 52 seat in special election

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A Democrat is filling former Alabama state Rep. John Rogers’ seat in the Alabama Legislature.

    The special general election for Alabama House District 52 was held in Jefferson County on Tuesday, and Democrat Kelvin Datcher took home the majority of votes over Republican challenger Erskine Brown Jr. Unofficial results from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website reveal Datcher received 1,174 (84.10%) votes compared to Brown’s 218 (15.62%) votes .

    Rogers resigned from the seat March 13 after agreeing to plead guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges. The Birmingham Democrat, who was first elected to the Alabama House in 1982, was sentenced to 13 months in prison .

    The next legislative session will start in 2025.
