You might not be spending as much time hanging outside during the late fall and winter months, but don’t let your deck fall to the wayside. Excessive moisture is common in the winter– especially with these rainy Southeastern winters– and this can lead to structural damage if you don’t keep an eye on it!
It’s important to make sure your deck has a protective finish on it to help guard against the buildup of excess moisture often caused by our wet southern winters and from fallen leaves that don’t dry quickly due to cooler temperatures.
Remove Furniture and Pots
Be sure to move outdoor furniture and pots to storage, or inside, during late fall and winter. If left out on your deck, these items can create a haven for moisture, mold or mildew that can damage your deck if it isn’t able to dry out on a regular basis.
Keep It Clean
Keeping your deck clear of any moss, mold or mildew from moisture build up can be a game changer during the late fall and winter. These can all cause damage to your deck if left in place and can also make the surface of your deck slippery when there’s an abundance of rain, frost or a freeze.
Remember to inspect your deck weekly or bi-weekly for any moss, mold or mildew build up. If you have a larger deck that is too much work to clean by hand, you can always clean it with a pressure washer on warmer days so it will have time to dry out before the evening cooler temps.
No Metal Tools or Salt
Salt can be an easy way to thaw out ice during a freeze, but it also draws out moisture and can damage your deck if used during a storm. Though it’s rare, if it happens to snow, be sure to only use plastic tools to clear the snow and ice buildup as metal can damage the integrity of your deck.
