TRUSSVILLE, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A mom of two in Trussville has joined a nationwide trend to encourage kids to take a healthy and safe way to school.

The Magnolia Bike Bus is a parent-led bike club for kids that services the area around Magnolia Elementary School. Audra Marshall says she was inspired to start the group after seeing the trend on social media.

“We have a set route that we take — very similar to a school bus route — and then you take that route around the neighborhood and then you make it to school,” Marshall said. “It’s safe because you are biking in higher numbers and, of course, kids are chaperoned by the adults.”

She also was encouraged to start the club after noticing the lack of bike riders at her son’s elementary school. The Magnolia Bike Bus now consists of 20 kids and their parents and continues to grow.

“It’s been really exciting to see us pack out our bike racks and hope to lead them to get even more bike racks,” Marshall said.

Marshall says she’s always looking for more adult chaperones to help out. She’s encouraging as many students in the area as possible to participate, even if they aren’t students at Magnolia.

Those interested in joining the Magnolia Bike Bus can message Marshall on Instagram @magnoliabikebus or email magnoliabikebus@gmail.com.
