TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Officials with the City of Tuscaloosa held a groundbreaking ceremony for major upgrades to Burrell Odom Park Friday morning.

Improvements to this neighborhood park will include new lighting and security, a walking track, two playgrounds and a basketball court.

“Today we break ground on hope,” Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said during the ceremony. “The hope that this will be a community gathering space and that memories will be made here that will last forever, especially by the 200 children that live within walking distance of this park.”

Tuscaloosa’s ‘Tech or Treat’ planned for Oct. 24, featuring spooky STEAM fun

In 2015, the park was renamed in honor of the late city councilor Burrell Odom. Former councilor Phyllis Odom gave a brief speech at Friday’s event.

“My husband would be so proud, this is a great day in Tuscaloosa,” Phyllis Odom said.

The construction work on this project, which is part of the city’s Elevate Tuscaloosa program , is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
