CALERA, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A vote to move forward with an expansion to add new homes and other amenities to the Waterford Subdivision in Calera was tabled at Monday’s city council meeting.

Council members made the decision to table a vote to allow further review on the Waterford Subdivision plan, which would include properties for mixed use, detached single family
residential housing, a swimming pool, a clubhouse and more.

Lydia Godwin is one resident who lives in the Waterford Subdivision. She attended Monday night’s meeting to express concern with the proposal, saying the subdivision only has one entrance and one exit and adding new homes to this could cause a bigger problem.

“We just want a second entrance, and we want it done right,” Godwin. “I think that the public, especially Waterford, is aware of the accidents that happen at our entrance. While we can stop, pray and have concern for the people involved in the accidents, it presents a whole other problem when you have 800 plus residents stuck.”

A similar concern was presented by Calera resident Jennifer Flourenoy.

“My concern is the overcrowding. First, it was the infrastructure,” said Flourenoy.

President of the Waterford Subdivision, Terrell Lykes, said he feels the decision to table the vote on the Waterford Development plan is prolonging the process.

“It seems like every time we get to a point of thinking we’re there, it’s another hurdle thrown in the way to stop us. Seems like every single meeting we’ve come to over
the past year, it’s like never ending.” said Lykes.

According to Lykes and the developers, the plan does include adding a second entrance but he’s not sure if it would be much of a resource.

“If you look at the map, technically, where the second entrance is it doesn’t really benefit the whole entire subdivision. Most people are not going to come to the back of
the subdivision to exit out,” said Lykes.

Calera City Councilor Kay Snowden Turner said the safety of the residents is at the top of mind.

“The city leaders are concerned about the safety of the residents of Waterford,” said Snowden Turner.

The city council plans to vote on this Oct. 21.
