BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A family entertainment center is expected to be built adjacent to the current Birmingham CrossPlex campus.

The Birmingham City Council unanimously approved a funding agreement for the construction of the $15 million facility on Tuesday. The 20,000 square foot family fun center will include a skating rink, jump park, e-sports center, bowling alley, table game space, pickleball courts and a food court.

“This is a great day for the families of Birmingham,” said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin in a statement. “No longer will residents have to look outside our city for a safe, fun place to enjoy with loved ones. This center will not only bring new revenue to the area, but also a new, exciting energy that will invigorate the community and beyond.”

Groundbreaking is expected to occur within the next 30 days, according to the city. The city council stated the facility’s construction is expected to up to 18 months. It is expected to generate $85,000 of revenue per month and add 75 jobs. A third-party venue management company will operate the center, though the city will own it.

The mayor’s team said public safety will be a priority. The building will include metal detectors, and a detailed safety plan will be introduced in the coming months.
