BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Nursing has been inducted in the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame .

Joy Deupree, who serves as co-director of the school’s Leadership and Health Policy Initiative, is one of only two nurses who will be part of the 13-member induction class this year.

“To be inducted into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame is quite humbling,” Deupree said in a a statement. “I have such immense respect for the other Hall of Fame members, and I never dreamed I would fall into the category of this select group of health care leaders.”

Deupree, who also serves as director of Health Policy Partnerships at UAB, has been a nurse and women’s health nurse practitioner for nearly 30 years. Throughout her career, she has been involved in health policy, as well as research and education efforts regarding women’s health across Alabama.

Deupree served as a faculty member at the nursing school from 1999 until her retirement in 2019, only to return to help lead the Leadership and Health Policy Initiative last year.

The Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame was founded in 1997 to recognize “exceptional health care professionals for their impactful service to the state of Alabama.”
